It does not use batteries, and is instead charged by pressing the Left Mouse button repeatedly or the Interact Button on mobile, causing a shaking animation in-game, while making a lot of noise every time it is charged. It functions similarly to a flashlight, except the battery drains much faster, the light produced is green, and is slightly dimmer than that of a flashlight. The first room (A-000) contains an area where the player can buy a Shakelight for 10. However, The Rooms' entrance or The Large Basement will never spawn before Room 60. When this happens, the player cannot enter The Rooms. There is also a chance of the Large Basement spawning in Door 64 and the entrance to The Rooms spawning on Door 66 or 67.

When this happens, the gate to The Rooms will already be open.

However, the Large Basement can rarely spawn at Door 63 and the entrance to The Rooms will be at Door 64. The secret pathway is behind a closet adjacent to either the left or right wall. The rooms are not considered a Floor, but as a sublevel. All players need to be near the door in order to continue, and opening the door will trigger a timer. After this, the player will be prompted to open the door by holding the E key (if the player is on PC) or the interact button (on mobile). When the player comes back to the now opened gate, they will be prompted to use a skeleton key and two lockpicks to open the A-000 door. The door is locked behind a gate which can only be opened by activating the lever in the Large Basement, usually at Door 61. Unlike other floors, The Rooms can only be accessed through a secret door that can usually be found around Door 60 of the Hotel.
